An open letter to Harvey Specter

The best closer in the new york city, a hotshot attorney, the superman, the James bond, raw talent, encyclopedic knowledge of the law world. I can just keep going on describing you, Harvey.

From a sophomore associate, you soon went up the ranks and became a senior associate to running the firm. The smartest — in both style and substance. And what can we learn from the man who, in his very first appearance, sagely said: “We’re in the business of convincing people to do what we want. And like it or not, people respond to how you’re dressed.” I still am learning how to dress like you. Your style of wearing that suit like armor, with those thick staples, a plain classy shirt, and neat long tie. I see the way you dress and then I look at myself, I feel I come from tribal species.

Every Monday i got to the office wearing that Harvey specter imaginary suit and confidence, with a feeling that nobody is my boss, and I’m my own boss. Until I get the senses back even before lunch, and I tell myself, not today, maybe tomorrow. One day, I too shall have that swag.

I’m no Harvard graduate like you, but I wish to become like you. I, unlike you, avoid that outrageous confidence, the power, the prestige, as a pragmatic concern rather than a moral stance, simply because I’m not there yet. I need to have the confidence even to think about having confidence like yours.

Although I disagree with you on certain points like keeping your interest above everyone else’s, and not following all the instructions, your risky methods and everything like: “I’m not about caring, I’m about winning.” But I want to think like you and create an influence on others as you do. You’re less or not emotional at all, and it sure helps. You want to win your cases at any cost, by unorthodox methods or bluffing, or calling in a favor of people at the right times. But you always remained a fair lawyer. Those sharp comebacks, and the ultra-sharp suits that I look up to. You’ve added to my role models list.

And I emphasize again, I can’t really be like you, and it’s because Harvey is a little bit of a superhero to me. If you’re the Macallan single malt scotch, and I’m simply the diet coke.
